History and Culture
The past has left its mark in the Cote D’Azur.
Roman buildings are still in use in towns such as Arles. The remains of an amphitheatre can be seen at Frejus, founded by Julius Caesar in 49 B.C. and fortified villages such as Eze were built as a barrier against the marauding Saracens who came to plunder the coast in the 6th century. The 12th century
Chateau at Gourdon was built on the site of a Saracen fort. Open daily June to September and October to May from Wednesday to Monday.
The area remains largely untouched until the 19th century, when it became fashionable for rich Europeans to winter here and many of their elegant houses remain. At Grasse, it is worth visiting the Cathedrale de Notre Dame du Puy which has paintings by Rubens and in Antibes, the
Musee Picasso is housed in the 12th century Chateau Grimaldi , once the home of the rulers of Monaco. At Cap Ferrat, the
Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild houses a wonderful collection of porcelain owned by Marie Antoinette. It's open daily, from February to October.
