Kilkenny


Kilkenny is set on the banks of the River Nore in South East Ireland. It is an historical town featuring a number of important historical sites of interest. The surrounding landscape consists of picturesque river valleys with rolling fields and green pastures.

The town of Kilkenny is a major cultural and historical attraction and is home to a number of historical attractions. Some of the most notable include Ballylarkin Abbey, with its gothic cut-stone window and the Norman castle at Kilblane. The 12th Century Kilkenny Castle is also noteworthy and vividly exhibits the country's varied and fascinating past.


Other historical attractions include monuments and ancient monasteries, which can be found scattered around the countryside. The Augustinian friary is one of the most important and overlooks the King River. Dating from 1462 it has one of the most impressively carved sedilias in Ireland.

Renowned for the beauty of its countryside, particularly the green valley of the River Nore, and the medieval city of Kilkenny itself has some interesting historical and cultural sites to explore.

Suitable outdoor clothing and trainers recommended. Kids will enjoy Nore Valley Open Farm which has go-karting and crazy golf facilities. There is a souvenir shop and café offering home-baked scones, biscuits and cakes. Open March-October, Monday to Saturday 9.00 - 18.00. For a family day out, visit Castlecomer Discovery Park which has two fishing lakes, a picnic area and children’s play area. Or hire a canoe at Go With the Flow and go river trekking on the River Barrow.

Kilkenny prides itself on the high standards of its restaurants and there are many traditional pubs which retain both the atmosphere and traditions for which Ireland is famous. Tynan’s on St John’s bridge in Kilkenny City is and old-fashioned pub with grocer’s shop and Rafter Dempsey on Friary Street offers bar food and live music. There is a self-service restaurant in The Parade and for fine dining, Lacke House on the Dublin Road has a reputation for international cuisine.


Kilkenny CastleHistory and Culture
Home to some fascinating historical sites, Kilkenny City has a cathedral, a castle and retains its original medieval street plan which can be explored on foot. Notable attractions include St Canice Castle, which has fine views from its 9th century tower and Kilkenny Castle which built in the 12th century and remodelled in Victorian times.


Dulske Abbey is the largest Cistercian monastery in Ireland. It has a visitor centre, an art exhibition and gift shop. It is open all year round Monday to Friday 10.00 - 17.00. Near Castlecorner is the famous Dunmore Cave, a vast limestone cavern with several chambers - it has an exhibition centre and is open daily from March to October and at weekends for the rest of the year.
