County Mayo is the third largest county in Ireland and is located in the province of Connaught on the West Coast. It is bounded by Galway, Roscommon and Sligo and has a population of 125,000 people.

Fives miles from the town of Mayo lies the mountain of Croagh Patrick. This peak is considered by many to be sacred tribute to Ireland's national apostle St. Patrick. Outdoor Activities

The newest of Ireland’s National Parks is at Ballycroy where you can enjoy a variety of activities from cycling the nature trails to hiking and fishing. Serious walkers can follow the 22 mile Clew Bay Archaeological Trail. Alternativley try Delphi Adventure which offers courses in surfing, canoeing and mountaineering for both adults and kids. There is plenty of choice when it comes to finding places to eat in County Mayo. The Broken Jug in Ballina is a popular tourist haunt and offers carvery lunches in a friendly and lively atmosphere. Flannery’s in Ballinrobe has a reputation for the quality of its food and has regular live music sessions.


Calvey’s is located on Achill Island and is renowned for tits seafood: oysters, mussels, crab and turbot. The Sol Rio Restaurant in Westport serves Mediterranean dishes and Quay Cottage, overlooking the harbour, specialises in locally caught fish and also serves steaks. The award-winning Murphy Brothers Bar in Ballina has an extensive menu with vegetarian options.


Shrule CastleHistory and Culture
Prehistoric sites are plentiful, particularly on the Murrisk Peninsula, south west of Westport. At the mouth of the bay, visit Clare Island to see the Lecarrow court-tomb, standing stones, forts and Iron Age huts. Nearby is a ruined castle and a 16th century Cistercian monastery. The boat service runs from Roonagh Quay.


Ballintubber Abbey was built in 1216 and has been in continuous use for almost 800 years. The biggest prehistoric site is the Ceide Fields near Ballycastle, lying under a 5000 year old bog with remains of the Neolithic period. There is a Visitor Centre, exhibits and an AV presentation on site. To the east of Lough Mask is a 13th century castle at Shrule on the Black River.
